Is it Haram to be materialistic ?

If someone buys a BMW or if a girl buys a louie vaton bag, is it Haram to be materialistic ???

it isn't haram if they have the spare money after paying proper amount of zakah, and securing their Deen in the society. after that, they can spend it on halal things.
of course, cars and bags are halal, unless their manufacturers are working against Islam in any way. its the same as helping in the trades and profits of a pork butcher, while you are only buying chicken from him.
anyway, if you are not really bothered about earning maximum thawaab and striving only in the course of Allah ta'ala, you don't need to bother about the rest. But if you do care about what happens to you in the Aakhirah, then you might wanna switch that luxury shopping and material satisfaction to helping the poor Muslima of the world...or buying some good Islamic books, etc.
all your actions count honey, and it will be presented to Allah. its your free will, now you can choose to satisfy yourself, or please Allah...so you can get all the luxury of Paradise.
salaam

at the same time as we shouldnt be "cheap" ALLAH also says ‘waste not in excess’, its the reason why men cant wear things below their ankles. in the old times, men would drag their garmets behind them as a sign that they were rich and could afford long wasteful clothes..so thats where the hadith "below the ankles is in hellfire" comes from. there is ALWAYS a middle path in anything..and thats always the best to take. is there a cheaper car thats probably just as nice? is there a cheaper purse than $5000? yea, i think so.

    It is Haram. Very haram.

Be modest, Instead of buying a BMW, you could buy a hybrid and give the rest of the money to the poor…. This can be applied to everything.

Materialism is a disease in the soul.

It will corrupt you, destroy your faith and keep you anchored to this world, forgetting the after life.

Materialism is a work of the shaitan.

    yea

desiring material = desiring worldly goods
leads to feelings such as gluttony, greed, and lust (desiring body–>making the body nothing but material)

and breaks away from spiritual desires to please Allah(swt)

of course, if you have the money..invest in quality goods…but don’t be extravagant…don’t get something more than what you will work perfectly with (if you can afford it) b/c you can use that excess of money to help the greater good through charity/donations

    also leads to selfishness

Not really but it should be in moderation and there is far greater reward using that same money for the BMW or louie vaton bag to give to charity but I’d really like to see that happen :0

Obviously. It’s better to be humble when you’re rich, and not flaunt it off. You should always be considerate of those who aren’t well off, and show respect for them.

There is nothing wrong with being rich, it’s just not good to give the impression that you are rich. Then people will envy you , and it’s not good to flaunt all the expensive things you have. Everything is good in moderation.

It is not haram to be materialistic. In the Quran even Allah has said that i have put love of family, things etc in your heart. So it is not haram to love any of the worldly materials. Only thing Allah has said is that you do not love these materialistic things so much that you forget your duty toward Allah and its creations. Meaning if you have lots of money, you buy lots of things but do not give zakat, or sadaqah or help others like in family or even outside, than that love for materials is haram, but if you love your things and also do your duties toward others, help others, give zakat and sadaqah etc, than its not. Just do everything in its limit, if you need one car, buy only one, don’t buy too many. If you can work with Nissan, don’t really need BMW, than go for Nissan, not BMW. I hope you understand what i mean. Take care

In Islam there are wonderful barkaat (blessings) in simplicity.
With simplicity a person is saved from many difficulties and hardships in over spending and squandering which is in fact anti-Islamic values.
Super-materialism is pomp and pretence which brings in numerous difficulties.
In contrast, there is sweetness and comfort in simplicity.
It is pride and the thought of other’s opinions that prevents a person from adopting the simple conduct of simplicity in life-style!

Verily this world is a house of truth for those who look into it deeply and carefully, an abode of peace and rest for those who understand its ways, and moods, and it is the best working ground for those who want to procure rewards for life hereafter.

He who recognizes Allah accurately will fear Him. He who fears Allah accurately will disregard the worldly pleasures.

"Whoever keeps his affairs in order with God (follows His orders sincerely), God will also put his affairs with men in order; whoever makes arrangements for salvation, the Lord will arrange his worldly affairs; whoever advises his own self, God will also protect him."

The world is the believer’s jail, patience is his fortress, and Paradise is his abode. The world is the disbeliever’s paradise, grave is his jail, and Hell is his abode.
